U0100 means one or more control modules lost communication with the engine or powertrain control module. It does not prove that the ECM or PCM has failed. Low system voltage, weak grounds, connector problems, CAN-bus faults, and interrupted power feeds can all produce the same communication symptom.

Start with a full-vehicle scan and save every stored, pending, and history code. Record which modules still communicate and which report U0100. Note battery voltage, ignition state, engine state, freeze-frame data, and the time or mileage associated with each code. Multiple communication codes recorded at the same time often point to a shared power, ground, or network event.

Measure battery voltage after the vehicle has rested, capture minimum voltage during cranking, and check charging voltage at idle and under electrical load. Compare a digital multimeter reading with scan-tool voltage data. A brief voltage drop can reset a module and create network codes even when the battery later appears normal.

Inspect ECM/PCM fuses, relays, grounds, and power feeds with the circuit loaded. A continuity test alone can miss resistance that appears only when current flows. Use voltage-drop testing on both the positive and ground sides, following the vehicle manufacturer's wiring information and limits.

Use the wiring diagram to identify the network used by the affected modules. With power off and the vehicle prepared according to the service procedure, check network resistance and look for an open circuit, a short to power, a short to ground, or one branch pulling the bus down. With the network awake, inspect CAN-high and CAN-low behavior using appropriate test equipment and compare the pattern with known-good specifications.

Disconnecting modules simply to see whether communication returns can create new codes and risks damage if done under power. Follow the manufacturer's isolation sequence and save a scan after each controlled change.

After repairing the verified cause, repeat the same cranking, charging-load, temperature, and road-test conditions that produced the fault. Run another full-vehicle scan and confirm that the ECM/PCM remains online, network codes do not return, and system voltage stays stable.
